Biography

From Majengo to the national stage.

Born Major Nameye Khadija and raised by his single mother in Majengo, Nyeri, Mejja — known to fans as "Okonkwo" — has become one of Kenyan urban music's defining storytellers. A win at the national Celtel Talent Search led him to Nairobi and Calif Records, where his 2008 hit "Jana Kuliendaje" helped shape the sound of Genge. Two decades, countless features, and a run with The Kansoul later, 2026 marked his most personal milestone yet: his long-awaited debut album, Mtoto wa Khadija.

Today

Still building

Twenty-plus years in, still one of Kenya's most recognisable voices — with a countrywide tour on the horizon.

Collaboration only works when the vibe is right — status doesn't matter, energy does.

Themes from a Passion of the Weiss interview, 2022

He's been open that he won't chase trends: staying loyal to Genge, and to the fans who built him, matters more.

Themes from DW Africa's Starmakers feature

The hunger of where he came from is what keeps him grounded — and it's why his music speaks to everyday struggles with humor, not distance.

A recurring theme across his media interviews
